Exploring Migration's Impact On Australia's Future
Uwa Event Delves Into Economic, Social, And Sovereign Dimensions

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is set to host a significant discussion on Australia's migration policy and its broad impacts on the country. This event, known as the Laki Jayasuriya Oration, will take place this month, offering insights into how migration shapes Australia's economy, society, and national identity.

Labor Senator for Western Australia, Varun Ghosh, will lead the oration titled 'Migration and the National Interest: Economy, Society, Sovereignty'. Scheduled for Monday, August 11, Senator Ghosh will delve into the vital role migration plays in influencing Australia's economic productivity, social unity, and democratic independence.

In an era where anti-immigration sentiments are gaining ground globally, Australia's migration program is a hot topic. This year's oration will tackle the consequences of this ongoing debate, particularly focusing on the future of Australia's multicultural society and democratic landscape.

Associate Professor Paul Maginn, Director of UWA’s Public Policy Institute, highlighted the importance of the event, emphasizing the chance it provides for reflection on Australia's complex and evolving migration policy. "Professor Jayasuriya challenged the myth of a monolithic national identity," said Associate Professor Maginn. "This talk continues that legacy by initiating critical conversations about our identity, origins, and future direction."

The oration celebrates the legacy of Emeritus Professor Laksiri (Laki) Jayasuriya, a pioneering thinker and policy advisor. He was instrumental in shaping Australia's multicultural policy and spearheaded efforts for deeper engagement with Asia and the Indian Ocean region. Appointed to the Immigration Advisory Council by the Whitlam Government in 1973, Professor Jayasuriya was a formidable advocate for justice, diversity, and political reform.

The Laki Jayasuriya Oration is an annual event that not only reflects but also expands on his lifelong dedication to these causes. This year's event promises to be an insightful exploration of how migration continues to mold Australia's national narrative.
